The year that was.. (10 worst Resolutions)

The year is ending in two days and we can feel the excitement in the air. Most of us are busy planning our new years eve, where to party (by now I'm sure you have a place picked out), what to wear, how to do your make up, hats, tie, bowtie? With all these 'life altering' decisions to make, we forget how important  it is to look back at the year that was. We have been taught not to live in the past, but that doesn't mean we cant look back and see what all we achieved or lost this year, have we made new friends or put all our efforts in maintaining old relationships. Have we done any good in the world, fulfilled our duties and responsibilities? Have you lied to get out of situations or owned up to everything you've done? Has someone shed a tear because of you or have you succeeded in spreading an honest smile? There are hundreds of questions I can ask you, but it is time to ask yourself, what have you done this past year? When each year passes one thing that many

Women of Dubai beware!

A few days I was telling a friend in India how safe I feel in Dubai, and how women are not troubled here but I was wrong. This weekend I was struck by reality.  I was at a local mall in Deira's Naif Souq. I have frequently visited this place in the past three years, but this Thursday was very different. I enter Naif mall with my family from the basement car parking, my brother goes off to take care of his work, while my sister in law, my neice and myself look around and shop. A minute after my brother left the security guard came up to me saying, my dress is too short, I cannot be in the mall! I was stunned! I was in a knee length dress, with a full sleeve jacket on top, which is decent for every other mall I've been to in the UAE. I was shocked as to how this man could come up to me and say this. I clearly told him, I've never been stopped before at this mall (I have also seen people walk around in tiny shorts over here), to this he tried to act surprised saying that's

The festive season and the end of the year is upon us. While most of you will be busy buying holiday presents, looking for the perfect Christmas decorations, prepping for a fun holiday abroad, or simply re-evaluating the year that was, some will be looking for new avenues to explore and head about town this holiday season. For those who like heading out, here are a few things to check out during the first half of December. 1. Set the festive mood with 'Christmas under the Stars' by the ASSESS for an evening of Christmas carols at the Al Ain Amblers Rugby Club on December 5 from 6-8 pm in Al Ain. 2. For some Christmas shopping and family fun (arts & crafts for kids) in Alain head to the Christmas fair on December 7th from 11 am - 4 pm at the old Sands Golf Course, after Danat Hotel in Alain. For details call 0508065457  or email info@bpguae.com. 3. The Dubai Christmas festival. The name says it all. They have an ice rink, Santa, artificial snow fall, workshops, demos and sta

Its December! Tis the season to be jolly!! If you haven't already gathered, I am very much into the festive spirit. Its not just me, December is a month that puts a smile on almost everyone's face. Its the end of the year and time for a new beginning, its the holiday season, the party season, the wedding season and here in UAE its the season of national pride.  I'm also taking this opportunity to introduce my brand new website www.komalskorner.com, the place you are at right now. Its got a bit of the old and a bit of the new and its got a whole lotta me and the community in it, so take a look around and tell me what you think. At the same time I  would like to offer my condolences to Paul Walker's family and friends, the Fast and the Furious actor who passed away in a tragic car accident last night on his way to a charity event, may his soul rest in peace. Now coming back to the National Day celebrations. The country is celebrating its 42 year as the United
