Food Review - Icons Coffee Couture

It's summer and for me best way to cool off is with a big bowl of ice cream. But with ice cream come calories, preservative and even artificial sweeteners, all of which are best avoided. So what do we do now?

We head to Icons Coffee Couture. Yes you heard me right, salty ice cream with flavours like spinach, carrot and pepper. I'm not sure if it's something you will be able to lick off from the top of a cone, but it is something that you can drench over your salad or eat straight from a bowl.  



Located at the 1st level of Souk Al Bahar, downtown Dubai, it is a hidden gem for fresh, healthy and even vegetarian food. All this is great but what if you don't like sweet things, then what? Again Icons is the answer. They have come up with salty ice cream!


Ice-cream enthusiast and innovator, Vasco Valenca De Sousa is the mind behind the Sweet & Salty range, which is not only healthy but also a great way to beat the summer heat. For those with a sweet tooth, fear not, they have come up with ice cream flavours like dates, vanilla with dates and dark chocolate, all of which are sweetened using dates and no sugar. They have have a range if smoothies to try from. Bhindi 'Jaliwi' (Burnt okra)

Bhendi or as some may not it as lady finger or okra is a green veggie that is very common to Indian cooking and there are easily a 100 ways of cooking it. I choose a crowd favourite Crispy fried bhindi. Essentially what you have to do here is 1. fry the bhendi 2. take it out of the oil and season with some amaing Indian spices What I did the first time... Burnt bhindi 1. cut the bhindi into small pieces after washing 2. heated the oil and just dropped in the bhindi  3. I wanted it crispy so I let it cook, just when it turned dark green I went into to catch a glimpse of the tv leaving it on high flame. When I returned the bhendi was pretty charred to perfection. Mistake one - when you add bhindi into the hot oil it bubbles up and lot throwing splatter of hot oil all around. Mustafa Centre in Little India - Stereotypical or Useful?

As an Indian I can say this, Indians are very judgey of other Indians. In my short time in Singapore I’ve learnt that here they judge each other by their addresses. We recently met someone who  stays in Sentosa and it did not take them too long to take a shot at Indians who stay in the East Coast (which I’ve been told is pretty much Indian dominated). Now I happen to know a few Indians who stay in the East coast they say they won’t be caught dead in Little India. Luckily for us we don’t stay in any of the above mentioned places, nor do we care about peoples postal code.  But before you are too quick to judge Indians, let me tell you, as Indian we get stereotyped by others as well, so clearly the world isn’t perfect. When I mentioned I’m going grocery shopping to a non Indian person I recently met her first responses was oh Little India, Mustafa?
